Welcome-back plan

Nets are the easiest way back on the air. Net control runs the check-ins, so all you have to do is answer when it's your turn.

• Rehearse a net check-in on Key Up.
• Find a net near you. Local clubs list their nets on their websites too.
• Check in for real. Wait for net control to call for check-ins, then give your call sign phonetically.

Simplex means talking radio to radio, with no repeater in between. 146.520 MHz is where hams meet to make first contact.

• Practice the simplex scenario on Key Up.
• Tune to 146.520 MHz, the national FM simplex calling frequency.
• Call: "your call sign monitoring 146.520." Then listen. If nobody answers, that's normal. Try again later.

Parks on the Air activators set up in parks every day and want as many contacts as they can get. Today shows the ones your license lets you work.

• Open today's "Parks you can work."
• Listen to an activator first, and note their park.
• Call with just your call sign when they ask for contacts.
